E3 Press Conference Wrap Up

by S. Gibb on Jun.03, 2009, under games

The dust has cleared and the bombs have been dropped *sorta*. The big three have done their press conference and its time to break down the info. This year has been a very leaky E3, thanks to twitter, a lot of this years big info has been leaked out.

Microsoft kicked things off on Monday with Rock Band: Beatles. Naming the first 10 songs out of the full 45, showing off game play, All You Need Is Love will be 360 Exclusive, and there will be album and single song DLC. Tony Hawk came out to show off the skateboard add on for his new game Ride. Epic showed off their new Xbox Live Arcade game and talked about a play for free and downloaded supported racing game. Bungie showed off Halo ODST and dropped the new trailer for Halo Reach. Square Enix showed off Final Fantasy 13 and game play. It looks really good, its going to be interesting when they show the side by side of the 360 vs. PS3 version. Forza 3 is going to be the racing game of this year, since we still don’t know when Gran Tourismo is coming out. Kojima announced that the new MGS will be on the 360. They also announced that FaceBook and Twitter are coming to the 360 in the fall, the video marketplace will have 1080p streaming, no download and not disc. They didn’t mention that your internet speed will have to be at 8 meg per second download in order to get the full 1080p. The biggest thing they showed off was “Project Natal” their motion control. It looks like the Wii sensor bar with a camera and a mic. It looks really cool but I’m not holding my breath for it. Some of the things they mentioned while showing it were promising that there won’t be a new console from Microsoft for a while. Lion Head showed off their AI type game, it looks really interesting, but still not holding my breath. I know that I’m probably missing somethings but you can check anywhere online for the list of big drops.

I woke up late, missed most of the Nintendo conference, and then my cable was crapping out. From what I have seen they announced new Metroid, showed the new DS Zelda, and talked about some tween things coming out this fall. Like I said I can’t really comment on it since I didn’t watch it.

Sony had the most riding on E3 this year. They didn’t announce the PS3 Slim. The PSP Go! is confirmed for this year at a horrible price point of $249.99. We will see how long it is before they abandon the UMD, for as much as they say that they will support it, once they see how well the downloads do, they will abandon it fast and make sure that you either download it from the PSN store or the app for the PC. Gran Tourismo is finally coming to PSP, after being shown at the PSP announcement, its taken 5 years to get it out. It looks good and the all the numbers for it make it worth getting. They also showed the GT 5 trailer with NASCAR! They showed off MAG, not a lot but it was just enough to get the juices flowing. Final Fantasy 7 is on the PSN, Final Fantasy 14 will be on the PS3, online only and coming in 2010. They showed off their prototype of the Sony Wiimote. It will be interesting to see where they go with this. Not holding my breath or anything like that for this. Showed God Of War III game play and did say that it will be out in March 2010.

I’m giving Mircosoft a B+, Sony a B and Nintendo a C

E3 and UP!

by S. Gibb on May.30, 2009, under Uncategorized

I just got home from seeing UP and it was AWESOME! I really don’t want to go into detail about it here because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I knew before that Pixar can’t make a bad movie but this proves the point. Can’t wait to see the teasers for Toy Story 3 and hear the rumor for Monsters Inc. 2

Next week starts the nerdgazm called E3! The big three has been trying to keep their mouth shut and the ship tight to keep the leaks from hitting the intertubes. All three had a medicore press conference last year, due to the ESA cutting back on E3 but this year its the E3 that we have come to love.

Look for Microsoft to show off everything coming out this year and well into 2010. Everyone is hoping for Allen Wake, a game that was shown off when the 360 was announced, and been pushed under the rug since. The motion camera/sensor is the biggest rumor coming out of Microsoft along with Lionhead showing off something. If they do not debut Fable 3… I have no idea what they show. Unless its more DLC coming out this fall and then they drop Fable 3 for early 2010. Rockstar should be showing off early game play for GTA 4: The ballad of Gay Tony and maybe show off what Rockstar is working on next. Bungie will have a big showing with Halo- ODST and whatever they are working on next and I think that Microsoft would hint at their internal Halo project. Kojima could be dropping the Metal Gear on 360 bomb which has been rumored for years now. Expect to see Final Fantasy 13 footage with a possible demo date. Microsoft shoved enough money at Square to get the game, they need to follow it up with a demo before years end and locking up some “exclusive” DLC for the game. Don’t expect to hear anything about a new console or the X-Box TV that was talked about last year.

Sony has the most swirling about them this year. After putting up a one billion dollar loss last year, they need to make up some ground and they will try and do that with a new PSP and a slim line PS3. What they cut out of the slim line PS3 is going to be interesting. With what is in the current model, they have little room to wiggle here. Removing Blu-Ray is not happening, I see them cutting it down to one USB port, removing HDMI and Wi-Fi. Thats all that I can think of that they can cut without completely gimping the system. Its going to be boxed with one controller, the system, power cable and standard def cables. They should be announcing a release date for MAG, God Of War III, Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank, and Heavy Rain. Look for them to really push Home, giving some numbers on users online, how developers are going to be using it this year and other crap you can buy for your fake guy in the fake world. In order to keep up with Microsoft and Nintendo, they have to announce some exclusive titles that are not GoW, Ratchet or Uncharted. The PSP will either kill them or make them look like the smartest company in the business. Removing the UMD is going to splinter that install base or the download service is going make that system be the leader into the next generation.

Nintendo has the most ground to make up this year. After showing a pile of crap last year, Nintendo needs to focus on the core audience and make up for falling short with that audiance. There has to be either a new Mario, Zelda or Kid Icarus announced for this year. Wii Fit Plus might be the lead for the casual market. Along with some other workout/music/sprots title and they might be all combined. Nintendo won’t roll out a new Wii with HD, they are still selling that system for $250.00 and most homes do not have a TV with the ability for HD up to 1080i or 1080p. Other then that I really don’t know what to see. Nintendo will either look like champions or a big huge fail whale.

More of the normal suff will get announced, new Guitar Hero, the 2010 sports line up, download only games for XBLA and PSN. I really hope that Capcom announces Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and a release date for MvC 2.

This week will be a busy week for everyone. I will be posting updates with my take on what is announced and the crap that G4 shows.
